Model Railroad Open House

This looks like a great event to go to if you are in the Oregon area. What a great place to take your children and see the model trains and o scale trains in action.

It is also great for anyone just starting in the railroading hobby as you can see the trains and ask the experts before you spend any of your cash on model trains.

They're usually used around Christmas trees, or set up in your child's bedroom, but one group of Central Oregon adults is turning the hobby of model trains into a huge passion.

Saturday and Sunday brought the 16th annual Eastern Cascades Model Railroad Club open house.

With conductor hats ready, operators ran a complete model train layout -- with regional operators running the local communities.

Visitors could also ride an outdoor railroad and view a scale layout all day long.

For many of the club's members, this passion for trains started when they were children.

"Everybody is amazed at the amount of work and detail that we've put into this," said Bruce Blanford, president of the Eastern Cascades Model Railroad Club. "It's just ongoing, and everybody works on it, a little bit at a time. And we've been working on this layout since 1989 -- we are always adding something to it."

The Eastern Cascades Railroad Club is HO scale, or half of O scale, and has approximately 1,900 feet of track.

The outdoors branch of the club, the Central Oregon Area Live Steamers, has built a 1 1/2-inch scale railroad, now with one quarter-mile of track on five forested acres.

Organizers say the annual open houses attract more and more people each year.

Rail yard's appearance draws complaints

Summer is a tougher time to try to keep up the rail yard on U.S. 61 in Jackson. Over the years, city officials have fielded complaints about the area housing railroad engines, cars, ties and heavy equipment as it becomes overgrown with weeds.

Adjacent property owners say the rail yard is an eyesore. Others find the yard and its contents pique their interest. Rail yard owners say low funds and hot weather hamper upkeep efforts.

Gary Seabaugh owns storage sheds near the rail yard and this year has had problems with rail cars blocking customer access. Seabaugh said before the rail yard was mowed two weeks ago, weeds were chest-high.

Seabaugh approached aldermen Larry Cunningham and Joe Bob Baker for help in June after he said he couldn't get anyone with Friends of the Iron Mountain Railroad, the not-for-profit organization that runs the railroad, to do anything about the problem. Seabaugh said he was told before by the organization that there wasn't any money to mow or to fix the engines so the trains could be moved....

Model Trains - An Education For The Curious Beginner

Model trains are a fulfilling hobby for kids and adults alike and gives hours of pleasure for literally all of the family.

Age is not a factor that usually separates people who are into model trains with the rest of the population, it can be enjoyed by anybody regardless of age.

In this concise article what we aim to give the reader is a smallintroduction to model trains so that you learn plenty about the hobby and railroading in general to know what to look for, and what to look at next.

Model trains come in many different shapes and sizes, the difference between these sizes is usually termed scales.

Although the scale is the correct term for the size or ratio train it can also be referred to as gauge, what it really means is the distance between the rails on the track, however gauge is used when describing the size or ratio of a model train.

For instance N Scale trains are frequently called N Gauge, whereas something such as O Scale trains are most commonly referred to as O Scale not O Gauge.

Scale refers to the ratio of the model train in respect to the real train.

The most common and well known model trains are listed here:

G scale : 1-22.5

N Scale : 1-160

S scale : 1-64

O Scale : 1-48

HO Scale : 1-87

OO Scale : 1-74

These are the most popular scales and you're sure to find what you're looking for within these sizes and scales of model trains.

If you pick an obscure train scale to start off with then you may find that it is difficult to find things that you want for your hobby.

The most common scale of model train as to be the HO Scale as it is a perfect size to fit in your house or livingroom. The second most popular is probably the N Gauge or N Scale model trains, these are smaller still and make for a great space saving train set.

O Scale are also a popular size of model trains, not only is the O Scale size a classic scale but the trains are big and often have very accurate designs.

The reason why many people do not go for O Scale is because to have a layout that doesn't look small next to the trains you really do need a lot of room.

One thing you must also understand is that depending on what scale your model trains are you must also buy the corresponding track size or gauge.

Be sure to really make sure you know which track your trains need sometimes you can have model trains that are of the same scale but require a different gauge.

Now that you have the scale that fit your needs and you have chosen the correct train track gauge you all ready to wire up and get your model trains going.

You may think that your now finished but this is where the fun begins, you are now ready to start building your layout around your train set. This can provide literally hours and weeks of time and patience.

Model railroading and model trains are probably one of the only hobbies that grandad can do with his grandson and be equally rewarding for both parties, so go out and get railroading!

See you soon.

Seriously you are wasting money on trains if you haven't seen this...

Earlier this week I found a video kicking around the internet by a professional train collector, it seems to be part of a course and the weird thing is its free!

I have only seen the first video but the info in the video and the free PDF are pretty good, I will have to let you guys know what the second installment is like - it promises to be good.

Model Trains on Top Gear? Who'd of thought...

It seem james may has been up to his old tricks again - crashing someone elses event in the name of journalism.

Top Gear

Security officers at Securi-Guard have monitored Top Gear presenter James May’s model railway challenge in North Devon.

The stunt, in which May raced a team of German model railway buffs along the Tarka Trail, was guarded with 24-hour cover.

A security team equipped with a lone worker monitoring device from RedWeb Technologies were spread out along the nine miles of track.

It comes after an attempt by the TV star to run a miniature train track from Bideford to Barnstaple in 2009 was thwarted when thieves stole batteries and sections of track.

Lone tracking helps TV show stay on track
The lone tracking devices were deployed so that the location of all the officers could be monitored to ensure every section of the track was protected at all times, Securi-Guard said.

Mark Tapper, business development manager for security services at Securi-Guard said: “We were delighted to be asked to provide a security presence at this event.

“Our security team provided a visible deterrent to anyone intent on committing crime and helped to ensure the whole event ran smoothly.”

The model railway race was filmed as a special for May’s Toy Stories series.

Around 1,000 people turned up at the recent event to see May take on three brothers, who run the world’s biggest model railway exhibition in Hamburg.

The two rival trains departed at opposite ends of the specially built section track, but the winner will not be revealed until the programme is screened later this year.

What does Rod Stewart do in the morning?

Play with his train set - by his own admission.

Rod Stewart has recently won an award in hollywood - Founders Award for lifetime achievement at an annual dinner organized by ASCAP.

When asked what his top priority is when he wakes up nowadays he replied with:

"I couldn't wait to get up and work on my model railway,"

I can only imagine the kind of set this man has, having said that if I were his age and married to penny lancaster I don't think I would be rushing out of bed in the morning to play with my train set.

Model Train Breaks Record

A model train has broke a new world record with its staggering length!

925 FEET LONG!! The train had to travel 15 scale kilometres under its own steam (pun intended) to justify its position.

Model Train Show in Santa Susanna

Stephen Osman/The Star Bruce Hedin, of Simi Valley, with son Cameron, 4, riding on his shoulders, visit Santa Susana Railroad Depot and Museum in Simi Valley in February.

The club's expansive model layout represents Southern Pacific Railroad's Coastline in the mid-50s from Union Station in Los Angeles to Seattle, Wash. It is a constant project in progress.

Some of the work can be done independently and some must be done right on the layout. Goudsward made the bridge at home, but must construct the work around the bridge on the layout itself. "Buildings can be done at home and then brought and put in place," said Goudsward.

Tobias Vincent drives all the way from Palmdale to be a part of this club. He's a new member, who recently completed the six month required apprenticeship, and he pointed out the miniature model of the Santa Susana Depot, which houses the model trains.

The room is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 p.m., and the docents work the trains for the visitors.

EnterTRAINment Junction this weekend

"The train display attractions hosts the 2011 Model Engineering Show from
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

“This fills up the big expo center and spills over,” said Bill Mefford, the publicist for EnterTRAINment Junction. “These are, in my opinion, artisans. Rather than just being small replicas, or what have you, this has moving parts.”

The show will bring in about 30 or 40 collectors, including Peter Villarreal, a volunteer at EnterTRAINment Junction who builds some of the bridges and other structures in the display."

Model Train Show - Run by Enthusiasts

Great show - story courtesy of independantmail.com

 — Destiny Absher, 7, climbed across the seats of a small rail car Saturday while her friend Alex Beaty tested out the controls in the middle of the car.

Three rail cars stood in front of the doors to the 15th Annual Central Railway Model and Historical Association Train Show at the J.B. Owens Sports Complex in Easley.

“Guess what? He said he might drive us in this!” Destiny said.

“He” was Jim Hopkins, a member of the Greenville Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Hopkins owns and operates two small rail cars, having ridden the rails with them in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. He’s been interested in trains for 10 years.

Destiny’s dad, photographer Jonathan Absher, is also a train enthusiast. He looked on while Destiny and Alex clambered over the rail cars as he spoke about an 8-foot-by-10-foot display he keeps in his Simpsonville home.“You just pay a fee and ride for the weekend,” he said of the Easley event.

“It’s an historical display covering from 1941 to the end of steam locomotives,” he said.

Inside the Bagwell Gymnasium at the sports complex, three full basketball courts will remain filled until 5 p.m. today with things related to trains. Model trains, building kits, reference and historical books, and train magazines are there. Items for model train landscaping, crafter’s tools, and sound systems and accessories for trains are available as well.

Trains for little hands are available at a low table that bears a wooden track complete with scenery, miniature signs and model locomotives. It sits very near the toy area, where train stickers, books, puzzles and play mats can be found. The fictional steam locomotive Thomas the Tank Engine — star of books, videos and more — is there too.

Dave Winans of Simpsonville stood Saturday in front of a model display that was 37 feet long. He said that he “has been interested in model trains all my life.”

“And she married into it,” he added, speaking of his wife, Anne, who stood beside him.

“The big issue is trying to encourage younger people into an interest in model trains,” he said. “Other than Thomas the Tank Engine, I don’t think they’re into it as much as they used to be.”

Several of the models on display from the Piedmont & Southern Model Railroad Club of Greenville were built by Winans when he was a part of the club 20 years ago. He now has a 2.5 foot-by-10 foot model, “not a very big one,” in his home, he said.

The club began in the 1980s and took its name from the two major railways in the area at the time, the Piedmont & Northern and the Southern.

Dave Cummins of Georgia kept a watchful eye Saturday on the longest train display in the Easley complex, a 66-foot model with 2-inch scale tracks. He is glad to talk about the old days, when train tracks were not standardized and ranged anywhere from 2 feet to 6 feet across. For Cummins, railroads run in the family.

“My brother was a railroad fireman,” he said. “They would call him to move an engine, and my father would drive him to the tracks in his Model T Ford. I was about 6 years old, and I would ride along.”

That’s when he began to love trains and everything about them, he said.

“Out of high school, I went to work on a 3-foot narrow gauge railroad as a switchman,” he said.

Besides vendors and model trains from all over the Southeast, a display from the Central Railway Museum is set up just inside the front doors at the event this weekend. The museum is in a house owned by the city of Central. The Central Railway Model and Historical Association has gutted and rebuilt the interior of the structure. Ettie Ruppert takes care of publicity for the association and builds scenery for displays at the museum.

Central was a major railroad town in the 1940s because it was centrally located between Charlotte and Atlanta, which is how the city got its name, said Jack Green, curator of the museum.

“Steam locomotives needed water every 100 miles and coal every 200 miles and had to be serviced every 24 hours,” Green said. “Central was the ideal location for that.”

In terms of model railroads, a lot is involved with building one — first the wooden framework, then the electronics, and finally the landscaping. The Central Railway Association has put more than 2,000 hours of labor into renovating the museum and building displays. The club’s original membership total of 15 has grown to 50.

Trains O Scale - Building Structures

This is part one in the FREE series on how to add structures to your O Scale Train layout.

"This will be all about how to build the buildings of your model train set and all of the different options available on how to integrate them into your trains o scale layout. Although the techniques I am talking about can be used on your model train layout regardless of the scale and gauge you must take into the consideration that your buildings must fit your train scale. There is no point buying an trains o scale building set and constructing it in your HO Scale train set, as it will be out of proportion."

Night Trains - If your in town get and see this!

This looks like a wonderful museum (St Paul, Minnesota) its model train layouts but at night. Which gives a really romantic feel.

Night Trains

Each Saturday night from November through February, we turn down the lights and let the layout come alive in its own magical way.

Buildings and street lights glow warmly, setting the scene for specially lighted models of vintage passenger trains. The town of Mattlin is buried in a blizzard, and throughout the layout are miniature Christmas lights and decorations.

Not Your Ordinary Train Set....

This is a fantastic article and the numbers are staggering. Its a shame there arent any pictures. I will have a scout and see if I can find some for you.

Here are some numbers that help explain why jaws drop at the first sight of the model-train set that tech entrepreneur Peter Hambling is having built in the basement of his Medina family home:

• The train set uses 4,000 feet of track, 20 miles of wiring, 150 sheets of plywood, more than 50 pounds of wood screws, 15 gallons of Elmer's glue, 2,000 pounds of plaster, 120 train passenger cars, 350 freight cars, 80 locomotives and 40,000 miniature trees ranging from 1 to 20 inches tall.

• To accommodate the project, Hambling had a contractor dig out and build a 3,200-square-foot basement where there used to be a crawl space.

• The mammoth train set is in "the top 10 percent" in size in the country, says Neil Besougloff, editor of Model Railroader magazine. He says that guys (and it's almost always guys, who're "attracted to the construction, mechanical and technical aspects") who have the means might use "sprawling ranch houses with basements" for the large sets.

Do you have a fortune in your attic? And would you know?

This is a great article, definately worth reading if you have been collecting trains for a while.

Trains have always fascinated children, particularly boys. And it is a favorite of young Thomas train. Find all day, mesmerized, fascinated. This is a dependency of young people are not aware, and do not know if they were. Why I love them so much? Then the young people become adults, and the fascination continues, but now I understand their appeal. Now, they realize that they had gained control of a powerful machine. It "It 's a known fact that men love to play with toys. What drives them to do?

What makes them want to control a powerful machine? Even if only 1 / 87 the size. This may be the operation of a board of directors. The internal operation, such as electricity, the source of his power. Or maybe it's limited to trains on the tracks. E 'can remember a configuration of the train around a Christmas tree, and all around and around it every Christmas morning every year. But what about the trains, toys word is no longer adequate. trains for children have grown up in the car, and kids who became men.

The trains normally see around Christmas time are plastic. They are cheap and are not of high quality but low quality. They are a great way to educate children on a potential hobby . The boys grow into men, toy trains and locomotives, and built to last. Do not grow up a bit 'to switch "function that trains low-quality plastic.
